Most people buy a bike rack for the family they have right now. Then a kid outgrows a 20-inch wheel, someone brings home an e-bike, or a camping trip needs the hitch more than the bikes do. A modular system separates the part that bolts to your car from the parts that hold your gear. Here’s how to spec one properly, what the category gets right, and where it isn’t worth the money.
A conventional hitch rack is one welded assembly with a fixed number of slots and a fixed weight rating. That’s fine until your needs change. Then you’ve got two options: sell it at a loss, or own two racks.
Weight has made the limitations of traditional racks even more obvious. Many e-bikes weigh 50 to 70 pounds each, which can quickly exceed the weight limits of racks designed for lighter bikes. At the same time, households are carrying a wider mix of bikes than ever before, from mountain bikes and road bikes to step-through e-bikes and kids’ bikes. A fixed rack isn’t always built to handle that kind of variety.
Modular systems answer this differently. You buy a base that mounts to the hitch, then buy trays and accessories that clamp onto it. Change the trays, change the rack.
The word gets stretched. Plenty of racks are described as modular because you can bolt on a third slot. Under a stricter definition, every load-carrying element is a separate purchase attaching to a shared interface.
Three questions separate a genuinely modular system from a rack with an accessory list:
• Can you remove a tray without dismantling the rack? If the trays are welded or permanently bolted into the structure, you have a fixed rack with expansion options, not a modular one.
• Do the trays come in more than one design? A system that only offers one tray can’t adapt to a household running an e-bike and a kid’s bike. Mixing tray types on a single base is the practical test.
• Can the base carry something other than bikes? This is the one most systems fail. If the same mount accepts a cargo basket, the rack earns its keep in the months you aren’t hauling a full load of bikes. If it only takes bike trays, you’re paying a modularity premium for a narrower benefit.

Before comparing anything, go measure the square opening on your hitch. You’ll have either a 1-1/4 inch or a 2 inch receiver, and that single fact eliminates most of the catalog.
It isn’t arbitrary. A 2 inch receiver has far more cross-sectional strength and a higher tongue weight rating, which is why high-capacity racks require one. Nobody sells a 1-1/4 inch four-bike rack because the receiver can’t safely carry it.

Run the math: a 3+1 base is about 40 lb, each DUO tray adds 30 lb, and three 60 lb bikes adds 180 lb. That’s comfortably over 300 lb before you’ve packed anything.
The naming convention isn’t obvious. A "2+1" base has two primary tray positions plus one add-on position further out from the vehicle. The add-on always carries less, because it sits at the end of a longer lever arm.

The 2+1 carries more weight per bike than the larger 3+1: 100 pounds against 80. Buyers assume the bigger base is the stronger one. It isn’t. The 3+1 spreads a comparable total across more positions, so each position is rated lower.
If you have two e-bikes and no realistic prospect of a third, the 2+1 is correct and the 3+1 is actively worse for you. Weight per bike first, bike count second.
Three things worth noting, because they’re often sold separately elsewhere in the category:
• An anti-wobble hitch tightener. It expands inside the receiver to eliminate play, which is where most rack rattle comes from. Long-term reviewers consistently describe the connection as quiet and solid.
• Full tilt. The rack pivots down for hatch access with bikes loaded, via an outboard handle you can reach without leaning over the bikes.
• Keyed-alike lock cores. Two with the 1+1, three with the 2+1, four with the 3+1: enough to lock the rack to the car and each tray to the rack on one key, with spares for accessories you add later.
This is where modularity earns its keep, and where most buyers under-think the decision.
The MHS DUO 1-Bike Tray uses two ratcheting arms that clamp the front wheel from both sides. Nothing touches the frame or fork, which matters for carbon and for any finish you care about. It handles wheels from 20 to 29 inches, tires up to 5 inches wide, and wheelbases to 53 inches: so fat bikes and long-travel enduro bikes are both in scope. A cable lock is built in. The trade-off is simple: DUO for maximum weight, UNO for lower weight, tighter packing and less money. A DUO tray lists at $449.99, a UNO at $249.99 MSRP. You can mix them: DUO inboard for the heavy adult bikes, UNO on the add-on for a kid’s bike, is a sensible build.
This deserves a straight answer, because "modular" implies quick-release and that isn’t quite what you get.
Each tray gets an aluminum clasp bolted on with four hex bolts. That’s a one-time job. After that, the tray seats onto the base — metal tabs guide it into position — and locks down with a security bolt using the included wrench. Reviewers note the bolt can be fiddly to start, since you’re threading it against gravity.
So a swap is a few minutes with one tool, not a lever-flip. That’s still far quicker than buying a second rack, and it’s in line with what any add-on tray system asks of you. But if you were picturing changing configurations in the trailhead parking lot in thirty seconds, adjust expectations. Realistically, you reconfigure seasonally, not daily.
Fenders interfere with the DUO arm geometry. The fix is the MHS DUO Fendered Bike Wheel Holder, a $29.99 part that works only with the DUO trays. Hauling commuters, gravel bikes with full guards, or most step-through e-bikes? Budget one per tray. It’s cheap and it isn’t optional.
Every tray system publishes per-position ratings that change depending on what else is installed. This is a category-wide pattern rather than a quirk of any one design. It’s common for a rack rated near 67 lb per bike in two-bike form to fall to roughly 40 lb per bike once expanded to four.
The MHS version of the trap sits on the 2+1. Its primary positions are rated to 100 lb each, but that falls to 80 lb per bike the moment an add-on tray goes on. The extra leverage reduces what the inboard positions can safely carry.
So a buyer with two 90 lb cargo e-bikes is fine on a 2+1. The same buyer who later adds a third tray for a kid’s bike is now over the limit on both adult bikes, and nothing on the rack tells them.
• Weigh your bikes. Don’t estimate: listed weights routinely exclude pedals, racks, locks and battery.
• Check the rating for the configuration you’ll actually run, not the empty base.
• Add the rack’s own weight to the bike total and compare against your vehicle’s tongue weight rating.
• Pull the batteries before driving. That’s a dozen pounds off each bike, and you’re not exposing an expensive component to road spray.
• Check trailer approval separately. MHS packages are RV-approved in some configurations but are not approved for tow-behind trailers.
This is the part unique to modular systems, and where the long-term value sits. What does your hitch need to carry during the eleven months you aren’t running maximum bikes?

• Adjusting the tire support arches between different bikes is tool-free but slow. Households constantly switching between an adult bike and a kid’s bike will notice this most.
• After two years of sun, decals fade and the plastic components show wear before the metal does. No structural complaints.

Modularity costs money up front. If you’ll never use it, you’re paying for nothing.
• Your needs are genuinely fixed. Carried the same two bikes for eight years and expect to for eight more? A well-built fixed rack does the same job for less.
• You want the lightest possible rack. Modular systems carry a weight penalty, because bases and trays are separate structures that each need their own strength. Fixed racks in the same capacity class are usually lighter to lift on and off.
• You’ll never carry anything but bikes. The cargo conversion is the biggest argument for going modular. Take it out of the equation and the value proposition narrows considerably.
• You have a 1-1/4 inch receiver and need three or more bikes. No modular system solves this. The receiver is the limit; the answer is a hitch upgrade.

Get that order wrong and you’ll end up with a rack rated for four bikes that can’t legally carry your two.
